ORCHARD STREET RUNNERS

ORCHARD STREET RUNNERS

Orchard Street Runners emerged from NYC’s underground running scene and rose to prominence through its reputation for building high-concept, one-of-a-kind running events that use the city streets as a backdrop for experiential moments and storytelling.

Now in it’s 12th year, OSR organizes a weekly Tuesday night run and several acclaimed events including the OSR30, a checkpoint-driven race that makes a 30-mile ultramarathon out of Manhattan’s perimeter, and pairs runners with a cycling teammate who acts as a personal ‘domestique.’ The most recent edition of the race was won by a pair of Olympians. The OSR10K is a masterfully planned 10k running event that requires runners to stamp a paper manifest at a series of checkpoints - with the checkpoints completed in any order - making for a part-strategy, part-endurance challenge. The OSR1 is an epic one mile night race that sends a stream of runners flying through NYC’s empty streets - including a Times Square crossing - with winners completing the effort in under 4:30.

OSR’s innovations in night running and unsanctioned racing have impacted the global sport of running on a cultural and aesthetic level, and helped broaden and elevate the way runners interact with the sport. It’s magic comes not from ‘size and scale’ - the group intentionally engineers its events to be small and focused - but instead from the deliberate focus on community-building and storytelling, producing results and impact larger, more traditional races could only dream of.

Road Race of the Superwomen

The race organized by Orchard Street Runners is no jog in the park: runners fight traffic, and only the elite are asked to join in…

Running Into the Night — and Traffic

Running in New York City is about far more than the marathon. Each week, a growing group of running enthusiasts takes to the streets in an act of running rebellion.

The Midnight Half With Joe DiNoto and David Trimble

The LO-DOWN CULTURE CAST

This week we spoke to Orchard Street Runners Founder, Joe DiNoto.

“The Midnight Half is whatever the fuck you want it to be. If you go there because you’re trying to win, that’s what you should be doing. If you’re going there because you think running is cool or you just started running or your friend told you about it, that’s amazing. I think Joe has created this phenomenal race that transcends any type of person, skill set or whatever. At the end of the day, the coolest part about Orchard Street Runners is that everyone enjoys it. Everyone supports it.”

New York City's Underground Half Marathon

Since it's unsanctioned and not entirely legal, the Midnight Half can't close streets to traffic and set up a course—but that's part of the fun.
