Brought into being in 2018 by Zaakiyah Brisker and Jazmin Garcia, South Central Run Club was created to address conditions of inequity - “a culture of illness” - which festers in divested low-income communities. Both Jazmin and Zaakiyah experienced a childhood in South Central Los Angeles with limited access to spaces where community wellness could be practiced. Today, their community suffers under the duress of a historical divestment as well as a food and wellness apartheid in which community members must travel to have access to resources for survival. To combat the culture of illness, SCRC offers curated running events at culturally significant destinations in South Central Los Angeles in an effort to to promote cultural healing and wellness by supporting families in reclaiming their health and their hoods.
SCRC is focused on centering and engaging their community, and with up to 125 runners they are creating visibility and making a difference, step by step. With weekly Thursday Night Runs, Saturday Family Days, Hood Beer Runs and an annual F*** White Supremacy 5K, there is space for everyone at every level to join a run. The ‘Ride or Die Long Distance Squad’ serves to eliminate barriers that prevent their community from enjoying long distance running and culture.
“We believe in providing opportunities for our community to tap into themselves and their neighbors in real life, away from the pressures of social media, away from the demands of capitalism, away from the multiple roles they play in the lives of others.
And we’re doing this one step at a time.”
